Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ Plant, is an elegant and exceptionally resilient houseplant with glossy, deep green leaves arranged along strong, upright stems. This low-maintenance plant stores water in its thick underground rhizomes, allowing it to tolerate occasional neglect and longer periods between watering. Light

Zamioculcas zamiifolia grows best in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate partial shade and lower-light locations. In darker conditions, its growth may become slower, but the plant will usually retain its attractive appearance.

Avoid prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight, as this may scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced, upright growth.

Watering

Allow the soil to dry out thoroughly before watering again. The ZZ Plant stores water in its rhizomes and is much more tolerant of dry soil than excessive moisture.

Water the plant thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Never leave the pot standing in water, as overwatering may cause yellow leaves and root or rhizome rot. Water less frequently during autumn and winter.

Humidity

Normal household humidity is suitable for Zamioculcas zamiifolia. It does not require regular misting and adapts well to the drier air commonly found in heated or air-conditioned rooms.

Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth from time to time to remove dust and maintain their natural shine.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is approximately 18–27 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes and temperatures below 15 °C.

Soil and Fertilising

Use a light, well-draining substrate suitable for houseplants. Adding perlite, pumice or coarse material to the soil can improve drainage and help protect the roots from excess moisture.

Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser approximately once every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Fertilising is usually unnecessary during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows down.

Growth and Care

Zamioculcas zamiifolia is a slow to moderately growing plant that gradually produces new stems directly from its underground rhizomes. It requires very little pruning, although yellow or damaged stems can be removed close to the soil.

Repot only when the plant becomes crowded in its container, usually every two to three years. Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid using an excessively large container.
