Light

Place Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ in bright, indirect light. A well-lit position supports healthy growth and helps the plant maintain its attractive leaf colouring and strong contrasting veins.

Avoid intense direct sunlight, which may scorch the foliage and cause pale, dry or brown patches. Very low light can slow growth and result in smaller or weaker leaves.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of the substrate begins to feel slightly dry. During active growth, keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, but never permanently wet or waterlogged.

Water thoroughly and allow all excess moisture to drain freely from the pot. Never leave the plant standing in water, as prolonged moisture around the roots can lead to yellow leaves, soft stems and root rot.

Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows down. Always check the moisture level of the substrate before watering rather than following a fixed schedule.

Humidity

Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ prefers moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity supports healthy leaf development and helps prevent dry, brown or crispy edges.

A humidifier, greenhouse cabinet or naturally humid room can provide suitable conditions. When grown in an enclosed cabinet, ensure that the plant also receives sufficient air circulation.

Keep it away from radiators, heaters, cold drafts and strong air-conditioning.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is approximately 18–27 °C. Warm and stable conditions encourage healthy growth and regular production of new leaves.

Protect the plant from sudden temperature changes, cold windows and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15 °C. Cold conditions combined with wet soil can quickly damage the roots and underground corm.

Soil and Fertilising

Use a light, airy and well-draining substrate suitable for tropical aroids. A mixture containing houseplant soil, coconut fibre, perlite and orchid bark provides a good balance of moisture retention, drainage and airflow around the roots.

Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser approximately once every three to four weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during autumn and winter when the plant grows more slowly.

Avoid excessive fertilising, as accumulated salts in the substrate may damage the roots and cause brown leaf edges.

Growth and Care

Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ grows from an underground corm and produces new leaves from the centre of the plant. Older leaves may naturally yellow and die as new foliage develops, especially when the plant is adjusting to a new environment.

Remove yellow or damaged leaves close to the base using clean, sharp tools. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth and prevent the plant from leaning towards the light.

Wipe the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust. Avoid artificial leaf-shine products, which may leave a residue on the textured foliage.

Dormancy

During colder or darker months, Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ may slow its growth or temporarily lose some of its leaves. This can be part of its natural dormancy cycle and does not necessarily mean that the plant has died.

Reduce watering during this period and keep the substrate only slightly moist. Do not fertilise a dormant plant. Resume regular watering and feeding when new growth appears.

Repotting

Repot when the roots fill the container or begin growing through the drainage holes. Spring and early summer are the best times for repotting, as the plant is actively growing.

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current container and make sure it has drainage holes. An excessively large pot may retain too much moisture and increase the risk of root rot.

Important Information

Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ contains calcium oxalate crystals and should not be consumed. Keep it away from children and pets that may chew its leaves or stems.
