Light

Place Ficus lyrata in a bright position with plenty of indirect light. A location near a large window is ideal, provided the plant is protected from intense midday sunlight.

Gentle morning or evening sunlight is usually well tolerated, but prolonged exposure to strong direct sun may scorch the leaves. Very low light can slow growth and may cause the plant to lose its lower leaves.

Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth, as the plant naturally grows towards the light.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of the substrate feels dry. Ficus lyrata prefers consistent watering but should never remain in permanently wet or waterlogged soil.

Water thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the bottom of the pot, then empty the decorative container or saucer. Allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings helps protect the roots from rot.

Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows down. Sudden changes in watering habits may cause brown spots, yellowing or leaf drop.

Humidity

Ficus lyrata appreciates moderate humidity but usually adapts well to normal household conditions. Very dry air may cause brown or crispy leaf edges.

Keep the plant away from radiators, heaters and strong air-conditioning. Wipe the large leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant absorb light effectively.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is approximately 18–27 °C. Ficus lyrata prefers warm, stable conditions and can react negatively to sudden environmental changes.

Protect the plant from cold drafts, frequently opened doors and temperatures below approximately 15 °C. Avoid moving it unnecessarily once a suitable position has been found.

Soil and Fertilising

Use a nutritious, airy and well-draining substrate suitable for indoor green plants. A mixture containing houseplant soil, perlite, coconut fibre or fine orchid bark provides a good balance of moisture retention and drainage.

Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser approximately once every three to four weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during autumn and winter when the plant grows more slowly.

Growth and Care

Ficus lyrata naturally develops an upright, tree-like growth habit. Young plants may initially grow as a single stem, while mature plants can be pruned to encourage branching and create a fuller crown.

Remove yellow or damaged leaves when necessary using clean tools. Repot the plant when its roots fill the container, preferably during spring. Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes, as larger specimens can become heavy and top-heavy.

Ficus lyrata may occasionally shed leaves after being moved or exposed to changes in temperature, light or watering. Providing stable conditions and consistent care will help the plant adapt.

Important Information

Ficus lyrata produces a milky sap that may irritate the skin and should not be consumed. Keep the plant away from children and pets that may chew its leaves, and wash your hands after pruning.
