Maranta leuconeura ‘Fascinator’

Maranta leuconeura ‘Fascinator’, commonly known as the Prayer Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant admired for its beautifully patterned foliage. Its oval leaves feature deep green colouring, pale markings and vivid reddish-pink veins, while the undersides display rich burgundy tones.

The plant is especially fascinating because its leaves gently rise and fold upwards in the evening, resembling hands in prayer. Its compact, spreading growth makes it an attractive choice for shelves, tables, plant stands and hanging planters.

Light

Place Maranta ‘Fascinator’ in bright, indirect light. A position near a window with filtered sunlight is ideal and helps the plant maintain its vivid colouring and decorative leaf pattern.

Avoid strong direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves and cause their colours to fade. The plant can tolerate slightly lower light, although growth may become slower.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Water when the upper layer of the substrate begins to feel slightly dry.

Maranta can be sensitive to chemicals and minerals in tap water. Rainwater, filtered water or water that has been left to stand is often a better choice. Reduce watering slightly during autumn and winter, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely.

Humidity

Maranta ‘Fascinator’ prefers moderate to high humidity. Dry air may cause brown, crispy leaf edges, especially during the heating season.

Place the plant in a naturally humid room, use a humidifier or group it with other houseplants. Keep it away from radiators, heaters and strong air-conditioning.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is approximately 18–27 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes and temperatures below 15 °C.

Soil and Fertilising

Use a light, well-draining substrate that retains a moderate amount of moisture. A mixture of houseplant soil, coconut fibre and perlite provides a suitable balance of moisture retention and drainage.

Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser approximately once every three to four weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the colder months when growth slows down.

Growth and Care

Maranta ‘Fascinator’ has a low, spreading growth habit and may gradually trail over the edge of its pot. Trim long or untidy stems when necessary to encourage fuller, more compact growth.

Remove yellow or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy. Repot when the roots fill the container, preferably during spring.
