Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Zenzi’

Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Zenzi’ is a compact and highly decorative variety of the popular ZZ Plant. It is distinguished by its thick, closely arranged leaves, which grow along strong, upright stems and create a dense, structured appearance.

Its glossy, deep green foliage gives the plant an elegant and sophisticated character, while its naturally compact growth makes it particularly suitable for shelves, desks, side tables and smaller indoor spaces. Compared with the traditional Zamioculcas zamiifolia, ‘Zenzi’ grows more slowly and remains noticeably shorter and fuller.

This exceptionally resilient houseplant stores water in its thick underground rhizomes, allowing it to tolerate occasional neglect and longer periods between watering. It adapts well to a variety of indoor conditions and is an excellent choice for beginners, busy plant owners and offices.

Light

Zamioculcas ‘Zenzi’ grows best in bright, indirect light, where it can maintain strong, compact growth and healthy foliage. It can also tolerate partial shade and lower-light locations, although its growth may become considerably slower.

Avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight, which may scorch or discolour the leaves. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth on all sides.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry out thoroughly before watering again. Zamioculcas ‘Zenzi’ stores water in its thick leaves, stems and underground rhizomes, making it much more tolerant of dry soil than excessive moisture.

Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain from the pot. Never leave the plant standing in water, as overwatering can lead to yellow leaves, soft stems and root or rhizome rot.

During autumn and winter, the plant requires even less frequent watering. Always check the moisture level of the soil before adding more water.

Humidity

Normal household humidity is perfectly suitable for Zamioculcas ‘Zenzi’. The plant does not require regular misting and adapts well to the drier air commonly found in heated or air-conditioned rooms.

Wipe the leaves occasionally with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their natural glossy appearance.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is approximately 18–27 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15 °C.

Cold and wet conditions can damage the roots and underground rhizomes, so the plant should be kept in a warm and stable indoor environment.

Soil and Fertilising

Use a light, airy and well-draining substrate suitable for houseplants, succulents or drought-tolerant plants. A mixture containing houseplant soil, perlite, pumice or coarse material will help excess water drain quickly and keep the roots healthy.

Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser approximately once every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Zamioculcas ‘Zenzi’ grows slowly and does not require frequent feeding.

Reduce or stop fertilising during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows down.

Growth and Care

Zamioculcas ‘Zenzi’ has a naturally compact and slow-growing habit. New stems emerge directly from underground rhizomes and gradually form a dense cluster of upright foliage.

Pruning is rarely necessary. Remove only yellow, soft or damaged stems by cutting them close to the soil with a clean tool.

Because this variety grows slowly, it does not require frequent repotting. Repot only when the roots and rhizomes have filled the container, usually every two to three years.

Repotting

Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes and use a container only slightly larger than the current one. An excessively large pot may retain too much moisture and increase the risk of root rot.

Spring and early summer are the best times for repotting, as the plant is entering its active growing period.

Important Information

Zamioculcas zamiifolia should not be consumed and may cause irritation or discomfort if ingested. Keep the plant away from children and pets that may chew its leaves or stems.

Each plant is naturally unique. Its height, fullness, leaf shape and colouring may vary slightly from the product photographs.
