Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as Golden Pothos or Devil’s Ivy, is a popular tropical houseplant admired for its attractive heart-shaped leaves and easy-care nature. Its glossy green foliage is decorated with irregular yellow, golden or cream-coloured markings, making every leaf naturally unique.

The plant produces long, flexible stems that can trail beautifully from a shelf or hanging planter. It can also be trained to climb a moss pole, trellis or other support, where it may gradually develop larger and more impressive leaves. Light

Place Epipremnum aureum in bright, indirect light to maintain healthy growth and attractive variegation. It can also tolerate partial shade and lower-light conditions, although its growth may become slower and the coloured markings may appear less pronounced.

Avoid prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves or cause faded patches.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of the substrate feels dry. The soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings, but it should not remain completely dry for long periods.

Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Never leave the pot standing in water, as prolonged moisture around the roots can lead to yellow leaves and root rot. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows down.

Humidity

Epipremnum aureum adapts well to normal household humidity but appreciates moderately humid conditions. Higher humidity can encourage lush growth and help prevent dry or brown leaf edges.

Keep the plant away from radiators, heaters, cold drafts and strong air-conditioning. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their natural shine.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is approximately 18–27 °C. Protect the plant from sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15 °C.

Warm and stable indoor conditions support healthy growth throughout the year.

Soil and Fertilising

Use a light, airy and well-draining substrate suitable for tropical houseplants. A mixture containing houseplant soil, perlite, coconut fibre or orchid bark provides a suitable balance of moisture retention, drainage and airflow around the roots.

Feed with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser approximately once every three to four weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during autumn and winter.

Growth and Care

Epipremnum aureum is a versatile plant that can be grown as a trailing or climbing houseplant. Allow its stems to cascade from a shelf or hanging planter, or provide a moss pole or trellis to encourage upright growth.

Trim long stems when necessary to maintain the desired shape and encourage fuller growth. Cuttings can be propagated easily in water or directly in a suitable growing medium.

Rotate the pot occasionally to ensure even exposure to light and balanced growth on all sides.

Important Information

Epipremnum aureum contains calcium oxalate crystals and should not be consumed. Keep the plant away from children and pets that may chew its leaves.
